Why these books exist
Spend enough years in an emergency department and you notice something uncomfortable: medicine isn’t very good at explaining itself. Patients move through the biggest moments of their lives listening to a language they were never taught — their own bodies discussed in terms nobody stops to translate. The one machine every person owns comes with no owner’s manual, and we act surprised when people feel lost in their own care.
Dr. Anand has spent much of his career working on that gap from the inside — guiding patients through their healthcare journeys and translating medicine into terms and frameworks people can actually use. But raising his own two kids gave him a better idea: why wait until someone is a patient? Start years earlier. Start when curiosity is at its peak and fear hasn’t moved in yet.
The Micro Missions™ Series is that head start. Each book turns one organ system into an adventure — relatable, accurate, never daunting — so the body becomes familiar territory instead of a mystery machine.
And the long game is the real point. A child who understands how their heart works becomes an adult who walks into a doctor’s office unafraid — able to understand what’s happening, ask the right questions, and take real ownership of their health. These books are an investment in that person: the empowered patient, started early.
How a Micro Mission gets made
The medicine comes first, then the joke
- Pick one system. Book 1 is cardiovascular. Book 2 is respiratory. One at a time, in the order a curious kid would ask about them.
- Find the everyday version. A valve becomes a set of doors. A red blood cell becomes a boat. Alveoli become a carnival stand.
- Check it as a doctor. Every fact, number and pronunciation is verified before it’s illustrated.
- Read it to actual children. The final and most brutal edit.
